20 years old and experiencing definite hair loss... please help?

I am 20 years old and I've been losing hair for the last 3 years or so, though at the time everyone said it was normal to lose hair. However, I am losing a lot of hair every day. Today, my mom remarked that I have less than half the volume of hair I had three years ago... I can't even use tiny ponytail holders without twisting them twice around my hair. I seem to shed hair all the time (in the car, sitting down, in the wind, etc)... I don't ever put my hair up because I'm afraid of pulling hair out. Is there something I can eat (am I missing vitamins in my diet) or shampoos or treaments I can use??

The only cause I can think of is that I used to nanny little kids a few years ago, and they would "brush" my hair and I lost a lot of hair during those months.. would it have caused permanent damage that would continue me to lose my hair? And is there anything I can do?

Have your thyroid checked. Hypothyroidism can cause hair loss.

Excessive hair loss (more than 100 hairs a day) can be caused by inherited factors, disease, stress, medications, injury, aging, or hair care.

Inherited hair loss

The most common cause of hair loss is genetics閳ユ敎ou inherit the tendency to lose hair from either or both of your parents. This is called male-pattern hair loss or female-pattern hair loss. The medical term for this type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia.

In this type of hair loss, your genes affect how your hair grows. They trigger a sensitivity to a class of hormones called androgens, including testosterone, which causes hair follicles (which hair grows from) to shrink. Shrinking follicles produce thinner hair and eventually none at all. Men generally develop bald spots on the forehead area or on the top of the head, while women have an overall thinning of the hair throughout the scalp. About half of all people have inherited hair loss by about 50 years of age. 2, 1

See an illustration of typical inherited hair loss.

Other causes of hair loss

Common causes of hair loss include:

Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis), which is common in children.

Mental stress or physical stress, such as recent surgery, illness, or high fever. You may have a lot of hair loss 4 weeks to 3 months after severe physical or emotional stress. Your hair usually will grow back within a few months.

Hair care. Pulling your hair back too tightly or wearing tight braids or ponytails can cause hair loss. You may lose hair around the edge of the hairline, especially around the face and forehead. Using curling irons or dyes continually can also result in hair loss. Hair usually grows back when these activities are stopped.

Age. As you age, your hairs tend to break more easily, and hair follicles do not grow as much hair.

Other causes of hair loss include:

Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks hair follicles, resulting in obvious, round hairless patches on any area of the scalp or body. Severe cases involve many bald patches of hair or complete loss of hair on the scalp or body, although in some cases there is hair thinning without distinct patches of baldness. Hair usually grows back within 1 year without treatment; however, 10% of people with the condition may never regrow their hair. 2

Diseases, such as lupus, syphilis, or cancer. Hair may grow back on its own, although you may also need treatment.

Side effects of medications or medical treatments, such as blood thinners (anticoagulants) or chemotherapy. Hair usually grows back after you stop using the medication or when the treatment is over.

Poor nutrition, especially lack of protein or iron in the diet. Hair returns after you change your diet to get enough of these nutrients.

Trichotillomania, a compulsive behavior in which a person pulls hair out of the scalp, eyelashes, or eyebrows. There is usually mounting tension before pulling and a feeling of relief afterward. Trichotillomania often results in noticeable hair loss.

Injury to the scalp, which can damage hair follicles and cause hair loss.

Changes in hormone levels. Childbirth, taking birth control pills, or changes in a woman's menstrual cycle can affect the hair growth cycle and cause hair loss. Hair usually will grow back.

Hair loss can be categorized by types, and one type of hair loss may have different causes. For example, stress and side effects of medication both can cause a type of hair loss known as telogen effluvium, and certain types of hair care can cause a type called traction alopecia.

Have you checked your thyroid hormones? TSH, T3 and T4

Usually stress and /or thyroid problems cause hair loss.

Have your blood work checked and make sure it is fine. Then go see a dermatologist to see if there is anything that is affecting your hair.

Also, if you color or perm your hair, sometimes that will cause hair loss. I lost a lot of hair when I first permed and haven't done that again.

Hi,

First thing that comes to mind is possible thyroid disorder, or do you have an eating disorder like anorexia? You should go visit you doctor and get it checked out. Also maybe you are using too harsh chemicals on your hair do you dye or perm it or both? I know it sounds gross but don't wash your hair everyday. Let the natural oils from your scalp moisturize your hair. Also regular trims will help eliminate allot of breakage from dry brittle hair and will help keep it tangle free.

Good luck!

you lose 40-60 hairs a day normally. they are replenished at about the same rate. if u have dark hair you will notice them more often than light or blonde. your nerves can also cause hair loss. or a disease called alopecia. which means baldness or alopecia areata which mean baldness in spots. go to the doctor if you have more concerns.

Hi there,

just to give you an answer from a medical background point of view. Hair loss can be a sign of thyroid dysfunction, you may need to have your thyroid levels checked. A good B vitamin complex taken every day will also help with creating healthy hair. You should however visit your doctor, as hair that is falling out can be a sign of an underlying illness that you may not realise is there. Hope that was of some help to you.

hypothyroidism can cause hair loss. gat your TSH checked! some vitamin deficiencies can, too. Even on a healthy diet, vitamin deficiencies can occur due to malabsorption. get to a doc and get you blood tested!

See a doctor (dermatolologist) to rule out causes of alopecia (medically caused hair loss)

Hi,

Have you tried homemade natural remedies?

You should try them before going to any doctors.

Here something I took from the grannymed.com website:

"Massage the scalp with uncooked egg yolk, leave for 1 hour and wash.

"

There's a lot more, you can try it:

There is a product on the market for helping this condition. It seems to work pretty well for females.. not sure if this is the right name but may want to check (rogaine). Brushing the hair vigorously, has been accomplished for centuries. It usually enhances healthy hair growth..One of the practices long forgotten in the last 3 generations.

Seeking medical help seems very appropriate at this time..

just wear a hat

Oh, my goodness. Maybe you must delute your shampoo. Then eat more carrots. Also try to find an ALOE VERA LEAF and scrab it on your scalp every day before you take a bath. Or maybe you are using warm water to rinse your hair. Never ever rinse your hair with warm water. It will surely lose your hair. Better use a comb instead of hair brush so as to lessen your falling hair.

20 years old and experiencing definite hair loss... please help?

just use some of those shampoos like for stronger hair , or those that regenerate your hair so on and so on...I don't think that the toddlers are guilty or that theres permanent damage because of your brushing...

20 years old and experiencing definite hair loss... please help?

Could be your thyroid. It might be a good idea to get it checked, but go to a specialist, not your regular practicing doctor. A specialist will do a better test.

just pray and let divine intervention takes place.

stress - its psychosomatic -- stress causes a whole host of health problems. Sounds like you need a better way to manage stress before all your hair is gone.

that happened to me when i was around your age as well, and it lasted for a few years, i even lost my natural curl...but now its almost like it was when i was a teenager, thicker curly, it's strange but i have no idea why it happened...the only change was that i was on the birth control pill and it seemed that the hair changes happened during the time i was taking it.
