Curly hair pony tail?

I have naturally curly hair, I work at a barn and like my hair out of the way so I keep it in a high pony tail. If I don't brush my hair first, i get lumps and bumps on top of my head. If I brush it, i get a big poof ball instead of curls. Any ideas or tips?

Don't comb/brush it back into a ponytail. Instead just use your fingers to push it back loosely. This keeps it from frizzing up, and guess what? Those lumps are called curls! I don't even own a brush...it just destroys your beautiful natural hair!

Or, pull it back while it's wet. then scrunch the hair so it gets curly again. Personally I don't like this because it makes my hair look ridiculous when I take the ponytail out. But if it works for you...

braid it!

Shave it!

straighten it and tie it back

well you can go get it chemically straitened or straiten it yourself

I usually just pull my hair back when it is wet so that way the top of my head will be smooth and then when it dries, the ponytail will be my regular curls but there will be no bumps

use a pick instead of a brush to brush it... or a comb..

BRADE IT OR FRENCH BRAID

what i do because i have naturally curly hair, too, is i bend over and run my fingers through my hair and hold my hair in a pony tail and then i stand up and wrap the rubber band around my hair and it looks perfect!!

straiten it but not everyday. also, you can brush it then braid it over night then the next day it'll be wavy or sometimes curly...i have curly, thick, thick hair. I dunno what to do with it either!!!

wear it in a bun :)

Make a mixture of mousse and hair serum (try "Pearitin" at beauty supply stores) and work it thru your hair. Run a pick thru your hair till it's smooth, then scrunch the ends with your fingers so they stay curly. That should do it!

you brush it, then once you've got the pony in place, then put some sort of serum, that way your curls will be in place ALL day and not get puffy and unruly a few hours later.

*wondering if you are my twin?!?!* I hope you get a good answer because I too have long curly hair that I wear up in a pony tail and have the same issues you listed. I use detangler out of the shower then some gel...I brush all this through my hair and make sure to rub into my scalp as well. I put it up wet...I know they say not to, but I do, it's the only way it doesn't POOF out. Then I use this "hair milk" stuff made for touchable curls and run through all my hair, scrunching my curls..then I have some finishing spray stuff I spritz on to add shine and keep frizz to a minimum. These are all Tresseme products. Sounds like alot but really I'm down to quite the routine so it doesn't take that long to do. Sure would like something simpler without so many products so I'm anxious to hear any other answerers.

If you work at a barn I don't think too many people are going to care. Plus I'm sure you work hard so your hair isn't going to stay perfect so don't waste your time.

You can use a straightener or good conditioner that will make your hair nice and straight. If that doesn't work, go to a salon and get a hair makeover. Then ask where they get some of their products. If you really like what they did to your hair, try the brand and buy the product- the kind where you don't have to go through much trouble to use. Apply it often-ish. Also, you can use gell to style it straight in way it won't move out of where you want it to stay. Put it up in a weird do or do the same thing, just gell your pony tail. But anyway, if you work on a barn, does it really matter how your hair looks?

You should enjoy and show off your naturally curly hair !! I would suggest some good hair gel (I've used Garnier fructis and like it) that you can use especially on the front curls - and maybe some light twisting or pinning up of your front hair to keep it off your face.

That said - hair gel can look natural and make your hair more manageable even on days you want to just tie a pony tail. Remember to use the hair gel on moist hair and dry your hair next - so your hair is set the way you would like it to stay.

Put it in a bun, it look cool!

THERE IS A PRODUCT BY SEBASTIAN CALLED WET THAT WORKS REALLY WELL FOR CURLY HAIR. IT MAKES YOUR HAIR LOOK WET EVEN THOUGH IT IS DRY AND IT HELPS TO MAINTAIN THE NATURAL CURL WITHOUT BEING FRIZZY AND POOFY

That is really hard, I have the same thing. I don't think you really need to put down the lumps (I think they're cute.) But if you really want to try one of these 3 things:

1. Pull your lumps out with your fingers then clip or bobby pin it.

2. Hairspray.

3. Air dry your hair in a ponytail

Anyway, I think that the "bumps" (aka curls) are cute and make you look unique. You should keep them (but it is your choice, after all it's your head not mine.)
