Yes. Pekingese have very long hair and need to be brushed often. VERY often. First go over him/her with a stiff-toothed brush which looks very similar to a brush you or I might use. Then you must get out the undercoat. This is to be done with a fine-toothed comb. The kind they make for dogs is metal; you should never use a plastic "people-comb".
And I, also would suggest to you not to try to trim your Pekingese without professional help the first time. Perhaps ask to watch the whole trimming process and be sure to ask questions and take notes. And don't be ashamed if your first try turns out a bit iffy. And don't worry. It will grow back and you can try again.
