Please advise on products for my mixed race babies skin and hair?

My baby is 1, she is dual heritage white British and black Jamaican. She's very dark skinned with fairly soft thin hair that is in beautiful ringlets.

At the moment I use Johnsons baby top to toe wash on her body and hair and put johnsons baby conditioner. After that I cover her in vaseline and put a leave in conditioner called "soft and precious" that is for afro baby hair, and brush her hair out with an afro comb.

Her skin becomes dry the following day. I've tried olive oil and coconut oil on her skin but they don't seem to absorb well enough. My parter told me that we need to be carefull because if we don't treat her skin right now, then when she's older it will be dry and flacky. I want to do the best for her.

Am I doing the right thing? Are there any better products?

Hi- well can i just offer you a bit of advice. Vaseline is a petrolium derived product therefore doesnt absorb into the skin. You are better off using a almond oil from the local food shop, I am surprised that the coonut oil hasnt worked as I use it on my own scalp and skin and it works a treat. Plus its natural and will absorb into the skin. Is her diet varied with * good fats* that will help her skin too. Aveda products are also very good, and their shampoo called Shampure is fantastic on children;s hair, also helps reduce cradlecap.

Hope this finds you some help

Lol! Sweet heart, it doesn't matter if she's mixed or not! Infact, no-one on Earth has DNA that cannot be traced back to other races. o.O

So, what you need to do is think like this: is my baby's hair dry, oil, or other? Does my baby have dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, other? You know, like you would for yourself. It doesn't matter what colour it is, just how it handles our atmosphere!

To begin with, I understand the emphasis u placed on the colour of the skin, because somethimes certain products works better with certain skin colour.

With her hair you are doing allright except for the vaseline part, or maybe I didnt get what you mean. However, you shouldnt put vaseline in the hair, because it is too heavy for the hair, if you've noticed it sticks the hair together, which deprieves movement in the hair, hair should always have freedom to move.

I think you should use a seperate shampoo, I'm sure there's one in the Johnsons' range for babies, then apply the conditioner always. Leave-in conditioners are great deal, the one you have is good. After that you can put a bit of oil on the hair, not too much to allow the natural oil from the scalp a chance. You can use any of these oil - Almond, carrot, jojoba.

With her skin, I think the issue here is the fact that you use one product for all, not that its your fault. It's just that it doesnt always work for all. Use a seperate bodywash (Johnsons). You can try E45 cream you can get it from any chemist/ boots etc. It is really good, it can work even better when mixed with a bit of oil.

I would advise you to do everything in moderation, dont use too many products, try and stick to one product. Hope that was helpful.
