Try a "Zoom Groom." It's a soft plastic brush with big conical "teeth" set far apart. You can find them in real world and on line pet shops. You may have seen them and passed over them, thinking that they don't look like they'd work very well, but they work great!

Try going to your local pet store and look at brushes designed to get out the undercoat.This can help some but all cats and especially long hairs will shed.I know you said you are not going to shave him and that is up to you,but you can also have him clipped at a groomers.Not all the way down and they leave quite a bit on the cat,it just helps with the amount of shedding.

any wire bush for human hair works great. I know I use one on my long haired kitty. Also give her egg daily for her coat and a bit of butter to prevent hairballs.gl
