Each time I brush hair, I end up with a "pack" of matted hair in my brush. What "outside-the-box" can I do with this hair?
I am growing my hair to the length (10 inches long+) that LOCKS-OF-LOVE asks to make hairpieces. I am almost 1/2 way to that point. :-)
I plan to donate this, granted I do not "pull" it out each time I brush my hair.
I am one who thinks outside the box by nature, so I am seeking ORIGINAL ideas.

Well, I don't know if this is original, but I put those mats of hair from my brush in a small basket on my porch, near the bird feeders I keep out. I also put hair from brushing my two cats out there, as well as dryer lint. The birds come along and take the hair and fur, and use it in their nests; I've certainly seen them out there pulling strands out to use. The basket has wide openings so the birds can pull hair out, but not wide enough that it blows away (at least, not much of it...). I like to imagine that somewhere out there are birds that are a little warmer or have an extra baby or two because they used my hair in their nests. ;-)
BTW - I've send hair to Locks of Love twice so far; my hair is just about down to my waist now, so it looks like they'll be getting more soon!

The basket I use is made of wide-mesh wire or hardware cloth; it keeps the hair pretty securely in place as long as the lid is down (made from the same material). Birds are naturally looking for fibers and downy items to use in a nest; just put it out, and they will find it - no training required! Report It
